On March 26, Janam TV did a live telecast which exposed the illegal liquor business involving the CITU, the trade union wing of CPM. The CITU workers were unloading liquor in a warehouse belonging to the Beverages Corporation (BEVCO), the government agency-in-charge of liquor business in the state. Despite the ban on all BEVCO outlets in the state from March 25 by Government of Kerala, the illegal loading and unloading was a shock and nuisance to the people in the neighborhood.
This CPM-BEVCO nexus was exposed by Janam TV in a live report by reporter Abhilash. It was during the live reporting that Abhilash was badly injured by the CITU goons in the attack hence hospitalised. The police arrived at the location and saved the Janam TV crew. But the police have not yet registered a case yet. Sadly, CM Pinarayi Vijayan, who is also the Home Minister of the state, has said that he was not aware of any such incident.
District secretary of SFI, the student wing of CPM, has been arrested in Thiruvananthapuram for defying Lock down rules. He was riding a two wheeler without the mandatory helmet and even talking to a mobile phone. In the same district police took legal action against CPM men for defying police instructions over Lock down. However, the higher ups had reportedly taken strong action against these police officers. But, DIG of Police quickly awarded the police officers with 'Good Service Entry'. This is seen as an incredible development in the police department which is controlled by a CPM leader.
CPM workers violate lock down and attack police
In Aluva near Kochi, two brothers Nishad Shajahan and Nishadil Shajahan were arrested for attacking the police officers who stopped them while they were speeding on a two wheeler. When police stopped and interrogated them regarding the violation of Lockdown they attacked the police. An injured policeman is hospitalised. The DCP K. Karthik IPS has granted Good Service Entry to the police personnel.
The ugliest incident of CPM arrogance during this alarming period is from Kalamasserry, near Kochi where controversial CPM Area Committee Secretary Zakhir Hussein challenged the police in public when he was stopped by the police while driving a car violating the Lockdown rules. TV channels telecast his arrogant behavior where he was seen shouting at the police: “Don’t you know, I am the Kalamassery Area Secretary of CPM. You should identify the people before behaving like this”.
Hussein was in the eye of storm several times in the past. More than a year ago he was arrested and jailed for few weeks in connection with the kidnapping of a Kochi businessman. He was also removed from the party position. Not surprisingly, the party’s enquiry commission found him “innocent” and was reinstated. Hussein’s name again cropped up in the case of siphoning of flood relief fund by a CPM man from a CPM-controlled co-operative bank near Kochi. Later, CPM worker who committed suicide had alleged harassment by Hussein in his death note. Hussein had refuted the allegation by challenging the genuineness of the handwriting in the note.
The CPM workers have been violating the lock down rules and mocking the country's efforts to fight COVID19 repeatedly while Kerala has reported more than 120 positive cases of COVID19. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan too had declared complete support to the 21-day lock down call given by PM Modi and he had also welcomed the voluntary Janta Curfew on March 22nd given the graveness of the situation. But the CM's support does not seem to have any impact on the rank and file of his party, the CPM.

### Wait! Maharashtra? Kerala? Punjab? Aren’t these among India’s worst affected states? Didn’t over 300 people escape quarantine in Punjab, endangering everyone? If the battle in these states looks “easy,” how can it add up to a crisis overall?
Ok, there is this canard being spread that India is not testing “enough.” Perhaps it only looks like Maharashtra, Kerala, etc are worst affected, because they did the most tests?
But then, how did Jharkhand make the list? According to the same article, they’ve done just 61 tests so far.
Somebody should explain this discrepancy. If the most affected states and the least affected states, if the states doing maximum tests and the states doing minimum tests are all making the battle look “easy,” how come India is in crisis?

But in times like this, if Chief Ministers belonging to a certain camp feel like media will not hold them accountable, it takes away their incentive to work effectively. And that makes us much more unsafe at a time when the life of millions of people could be at stake.

It’s been (almost) six years of Modi already. What could be taking so much time?
Very well. The Govt of India should welcome this challenge. And the commitment of the media to keep the Modi govt accountable. At the very least, the Central government needs the states to cooperate. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today interacted with Radio Jockeys (RJs) via video conference.
Prime Minister appreciated the role played by the RJs in spreading awareness about COVID-19. He said it is praiseworthy that even in lockdown, RJs are discharging their responsibility and recording programmes from home.
Prime Minister said that through the reach of the programmes, RJs are like members of families of millions of Indian households. People not only hear but also follow them. RJs have a great responsibility not just to disseminate and disabuse superstitions but also motivate people.
Apart from spreading information about the views of experts and steps taken by the government, PM also requested RJs to provide feedback about the difficulties and challenges faced by the people so that the government can proactively resolve them.
Prime Minister exhorted the RJs to disseminate positive stories and case studies, particularly of those patients that have fully recovered from coronavirus infection, and also inter-play such stories in different parts of the country, thus bringing the entire country together. He also asked them to showcase and constantly celebrate the contributions of the local heroes like police officers, doctors, nurses, ward boys etc. at national level.
Underlining the importance of empathy, Prime Minster said that it is important to tell the stories of misbehavior with doctors, health care workers and airline staff due to societal fears of them being infected by the virus, so that such challenges are overcome. He also underlined the importance of educating the public about the dedication of police personnel who are working continuously to assist the public. He said that the public should cooperate with police, adding that while police should avoid usage of strong arm tactics, it is also necessary to enforce discipline. 130 crore Indians should act as national volunteers in fighting the pandemic.
Prime Minister said that the government has announced a number of measures to assist the poor and under-privileged in this difficult time. It is important that information about these announcements reaches the intended beneficiaries swiftly and in a timely fashion. Prime Minister said that as mass communicators, the RJs can play a proactive role in informing their listeners about the announcements, along with educating them about social distancing and the importance of self-quarantine.
In their response, the RJs called the Prime Minister as a part of the RJ fraternity since he has been hosting the widely successful Mann ki Baat on radio since 2014. Pointing out the unprecedented response to Prime Minister’s call of ‘Janta Curfew’ and his innovative idea of thanking the front line warriors, the RJs praised the leadership fo the Prime Minister and said they would be happy to play the role of the voice of the nation in the battle against the pandemic.
Prime Minister observed that public broadcaster All India Radio has a particularly important role to play in stopping the flow of rumours. He also requested the RJs to also work towards checking the spread of rumours.
Prime Minister urged the RJs to work towards ensuring a constructive and positive attitude in society. He said that ‘an attitude of togetherness combined with positivity is the key to facing the challenge posed by COVID-19’.

Very well. The Govt of India should welcome this challenge. And the commitment of the media to keep the Modi govt accountable. At the very least, the Central government needs the states to cooperate. As a matter of basic decency, perhaps the media should try not to take away the incentive of non-BJP Chief Ministers to pitch in and help.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today interacted with Radio Jockeys (RJs) via video conference.
Prime Minister appreciated the role played by the RJs in spreading awareness about COVID-19. He said it is praiseworthy that even in lockdown, RJs are discharging their responsibility and recording programmes from home.
Prime Minister said that through the reach of the programmes, RJs are like members of families of millions of Indian households. People not only hear but also follow them. RJs have a great responsibility not just to disseminate and disabuse superstitions but also motivate people.
Apart from spreading information about the views of experts and steps taken by the government, PM also requested RJs to provide feedback about the difficulties and challenges faced by the people so that the government can proactively resolve them.
Prime Minister exhorted the RJs to disseminate positive stories and case studies, particularly of those patients that have fully recovered from coronavirus infection, and also inter-play such stories in different parts of the country, thus bringing the entire country together. He also asked them to showcase and constantly celebrate the contributions of the local heroes like police officers, doctors, nurses, ward boys etc. at national level.
Underlining the importance of empathy, Prime Minster said that it is important to tell the stories of misbehavior with doctors, health care workers and airline staff due to societal fears of them being infected by the virus, so that such challenges are overcome. He also underlined the importance of educating the public about the dedication of police personnel who are working continuously to assist the public. He said that the public should cooperate with police, adding that while police should avoid usage of strong arm tactics, it is also necessary to enforce discipline. 130 crore Indians should act as national volunteers in fighting the pandemic.
Prime Minister said that the government has announced a number of measures to assist the poor and under-privileged in this difficult time. It is important that information about these announcements reaches the intended beneficiaries swiftly and in a timely fashion. Prime Minister said that as mass communicators, the RJs can play a proactive role in informing their listeners about the announcements, along with educating them about social distancing and the importance of self-quarantine.
In their response, the RJs called the Prime Minister as a part of the RJ fraternity since he has been hosting the widely successful Mann ki Baat on radio since 2014. Pointing out the unprecedented response to Prime Minister’s call of ‘Janta Curfew’ and his innovative idea of thanking the front line warriors, the RJs praised the leadership fo the Prime Minister and said they would be happy to play the role of the voice of the nation in the battle against the pandemic.
Prime Minister observed that public broadcaster All India Radio has a particularly important role to play in stopping the flow of rumours. He also requested the RJs to also work towards checking the spread of rumours.
Prime Minister urged the RJs to work towards ensuring a constructive and positive attitude in society. He said that ‘an attitude of togetherness combined with positivity is the key to facing the challenge posed by COVID-19’.
Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting also participated in the interaction.
