The Hindu has an office of Readers Editor. To summarize their long list of “terms of reference”, this office is responsible for publishing relevant corrections and clarifications and the Readers Editor (RE) will write a regular column “addressing one or several aspects of readers’ concerns, suggestions, and complaints, the content to be determined independently…”
The current Readers Editor writes a weekly column that seldom addresses the concerns of the readers. His articles are a bore and have no relevance to the “terms of reference”. I don’t even have to dig into older articles about him because he begins his latest article mentioning the same – “Some readers ask how my columns about the larger information ecology and about social media are linked to the journalism of this newspaper.”
He gives some random explanation for this query and proceeds to cite two examples – “A few recent complaints regarding this newspaper’s reportage on renewed militancy in Kashmir and border skirmishes with China clearly fall into this category”.
What follows is pure poison.
There was an “analysis” written by Ananth Krishnan in the newspaper on May 20, 2020. The Readers Editor informs us that those who read the article wrote back to him saying that since the erstwhile state of J&K has now been split into two union territories, the report should have mentioned Ladakh, especially given that the report was about “a changed dynamic along India-China border” and Ladakh infact borders China.
The error seems inadvertent and the feedback seems very genuine right? Somehow this feedback riled up the Readers Editor. It riled him up so much inexplicably that he started an unbelievable rant questioning the very split of J&K. RE writes in response – “They (readers) failed to recognize that J&K includes not just Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, but also a huge swathe of territory across the Line of Control.”
Really, “they failed to recognize” that J&K includes Ladakh? Where does this arrogance stem from? How does J&K include Ladakh now? The Parliament of India has decided that J&K and Ladakh will be two different UTs. The editor is free to propagate his lies and illusions on his own time without getting riled up at readers who took the pain the read the article and write back to him on an obvious glaring error.
He also tells us that J&K includes “a huge swathe of territory across the Line of Control.”. We now come to his next shocking line – “The Indian state calls the region “Pakistan-occupied Kashmir”. Really? Here is the latest political map released by the government of India. Can the editor point out Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in this map? Can the editor point out which part of Jammu and Kashmir has borders with China? Can the editor point out how Ladakh is a part of J&K. The Indian state has often said that it doesn’t recognize PoK so where from does he get the gall to write a lie like this and blame the reader for being correct? It is still mind boggling how he thinks that Ladakh is still a part of J&K and the readers (who took the pain of reading) are wrong!
He doesn’t show any signs of ending – he drops his next bombshell. “A newspaper has to take a holistic view instead of shoehorning its analysis into the official narrative.” Holistic view? Official narrative? That J&K and Ladakh are two different entities now is an “official narrative”? Denying their existence in now called a “holistic view”? J&K has no border with China. That’s a plain simple fact. Insulting the people of Ladakh by claiming to take a “holistic view” is journalism?
Instead of accepting an extremely well-meaning and legally correct clarification, the unwarranted rant by The Hindu’s Readers Editor is yet again exposes the poison that is groomed in the offices of The Hindu. Does he end there? No. He moves onto his next rant of not wanting to call soldiers killed in line of duty as “martyrs”. In May 2020, he quotes his own article on March 2019, in which he says “Ethical journalism will report the killing of a soldier as the killing of a soldier and refrain from using loaded propagandist words like martyr”.
This clear lack of respect for both the lives of the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice and for simple acts that define our own country is really painful to read. By using heavy words in long sentences such as – “To be a megaphone for governmental propaganda and keeping people in the dark is the role of the fifth column.”– these people may live under the illusion that they wrote something intelligent but simply fail to understand that these words merely expose their arrogance, ignorance and incompetence.
Speaking of “propaganda”, The Readers Editor is supposed to be correcting the newspaper and taking the side of the readers. He is not supposed to be the propaganda mouthpiece of the newspaper. How he misses this irony while lecturing readers who are correct, is a big mystery!

As with many other things, Rahul Gandhi needs a lesson in basic civics. In this case, it happens to be the principle of collective responsibility. In our parliamentary system, the Cabinet is collectively responsible for all decisions they make. Individual ministers may or may not agree with them personally. For example, when a Chief Minister resigns, it is equivalent to the resignation of the entire Cabinet.
So it is downright absurd for Rahul Gandhi to distance the Congress from the Maharashtra state government.

The Congress has ten Cabinet ministers in the state government and zero room for shirking responsibility.
I understand that Rahul did not have to work hard in school because he had all his privilege. But now that so many see him as a future Prime Minister, he needs to know this stuff.

First of all, let us dissect the mentality behind what Rahul did. Does anyone remember the “Bhilwara model”? After an outbreak of Coronavirus in this small Rajasthan town, local officials, sarpanches and people came together to act swiftly for a common cause. Their method of containment as well as their commitment was praised nationwide.
That’s when someone in Delhi felt that the credit was rightfully theirs.

How about we start calling this the “dynasty model”? When disaster strikes Maharashtra, the dynasty takes no responsibility. When something good happens in a district in Rajasthan, the dynasty takes the credit. In other words, all glory belongs to them. All our troubles are ours. That’s how feudalism works.
Let us now talk about the MVA government that rules Maharashtra. Let us examine this from the point of view of a voter who stood in line and pressed a button on the EVM.
For those who voted NCP+Congress, did they want a Shiv Sena led government? For those who voted BJP+Sena, did they want a Congress supported government? Did a single voter get the government they were looking for?
In a democracy, the voter ultimately takes responsibility for the government they have chosen. But who exactly voted for the MVA? So who takes responsibility for their actions?
The MVA formed a government by making the voter irrelevant in Maharashtra. So who takes responsibility for them?
Now Rahul Gandhi comes along and says even the partners who formed the MVA won’t take responsibility for it! So where do we go now?
The Congress in Maharashtra is neither prepared to play ruling party nor the opposition. In other words, Congress has abandoned the voters of Maharashtra. Where does this leave the 44 Congress MLAs elected by the people?

Rahul Gandhi had held an online ‘press conference’ yesterday where he had ended up creating a massive political controversy, albeit unintended. When asked about the Coronavirus pandemic and its spread in Maharashtra, the former Congress president had stated that his party is not the key decision-maker in Maharashtra.
Responding to the question, Rahul Gandhi said that since Maharashtra is most connected and owing to the nature of the state, the spread of the virus in the state was inevitable. However, shielding Congress from sharing any of the governance blame, Rahul Gandhi also said that Congress is not in a decision making role in Maharashtra.
Rahul Gandhi said that there is a difference between running the government and supporting the government in the state. He said that Congress can be considered to be in a decision making role in states like Punjab, Rajasthan, and the UT of Pondicherry but not in Maharashtra.
Rahul’s response can be clearly seen in the live feed of the press conference that was shared by the official handle of the Congress party on 26 May. The Maharashtra part and the controversial comment regarding Congress comes after 33.00 minutes.

However, Rahul’s video clip was from the part between 33.58 seconds mark from the original live stream, where he says that “Maharashtra is struggling because of the nature of its connectivity.”
The entire part of the Congress just ‘supporting’ the government and not being the key decision-maker was left out in the clip. So basically, Rahul had edited the controversial part out and claimed that there was no controversy. Some journalists even tried to point it out to him.

Maharashtra has spiralled into a Coronavirus hotspot state rather quickly with the number of positive cases crossing the 52,000 mark. The state now contributes over a third of the Coronavirus cases in the entire country, with Mumbai being most severely affected. While Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has drawn sharp criticism for his handling of the Coronavirus pandemic, Rahul Gandhi, during a press interaction today distanced Congress from the mess being created in the alliance government ruled state.
Maharashtra, which is currently being ruled by an alliance government of Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena, with a Shiv Sena chief minister has now squarely been abandoned by the Congress. Today, during a press conference held by Rahul Gandhi, he was asked about the Coronavirus pandemic and its spread in Maharashtra.

Effectively, what Rahul Gandhi seems to have done is put the entire onus of the mess on Shiv Sena and distance his own party, Congress, from the misgovernance the state has seen so far. This claim rings hollow considering Congress has several important ministries in Maharashtra including Education, energy, public works, revenue etc. For Rahul Gandhi to say that Congress is not a key decision maker in Maharashtra is a shoddy attempt of shielding his party from partaking in the misgovernance that has marred the state during the pandemic.
Either way, the undercurrent of Congress trying to distance itself from Maharashtra governance has been rather clear even before Rahul Gandhi spoke up.

Nirupam tweeted, “After Sion hospital, this is Rajawadi hospital of Ghatkopar where dead body is lying for hours in an open patient ward.#BMC officials incharge particularly the dean of the hospital must be sacked immediately for this inhuman act”. He followed his tweet up with the hashtag “shameful”.

The number of reported Corona virus cases in India is increasing daily and now it has crossed the 1-lakh mark. Unfortunately, lots of people have lost their lives and many of them are feared in the situation. However, certain sons of the soil even in the worrisome situation are repaying their debts on motherland by owning up the sacred duty of combating the virus and rescuing their brothers and sisters of the land. The sons of the motherland are non-other than the Swayamsevaks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
In the pandemic, Pune, the city of happiness has also been swallowed up by the deadly virus. Till now, 3000+ cases were reported in the city. Under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), doctors, nurses and paramedical staff have controlled the pandemic outbreak; however, the task is too strainful. Hence, to aid the PMC doctors, swayamsevaks composed themselves to counter the Corona Virus in the containment zones (Hotspots) of the slum areas in Pune. The promising aspect for the nation is that most of the swayamsevaks involved in this task were youths. Interestingly, the parents of youth swayamsevaks like Rutuwal Navle happily granted permission for the cause.
The necessary arrangements of swayamsevaks were made in the hostels of Abasaheb Garware College, Pune and then the swayamsevaks were medically checked-up before their involvement. Under the expertise of doctors of various leading hospitals, the swayamsevaks were trained about the use of PPE, Infrared Thermometers et al. To boost morale and immunity power, ‘Shakhas’ involving physical exercises, Pranayam, Suryanamaskar was held early morning daily. Finally, on April 28, the Corona ‘Yoddhas,’ i.e. PMC doctors along with swayamsevaks set out to defeat the virus in the battleground.
In these red zones, many were found to be positives, and a lot of them were kept in segregation centres. Every man was screened and recorded in the slums, body temperatures were checked, everyone was asked some questions and if required masks were provided. If some citizens were found to be different, they were marked and listed, necessary medicines were provided and the norms related to social distancing were explained. Screening in such slum areas showed that people were living in a congested manner in each house, few of them believed in wrong rumours and feared to come out openly however many citizens considering the seriousness of situation cooperated the doctors and swayamsevaks.
The swayamsevaks worked tirelessly for three days continuously and after four days of segregation, and on the understanding that the results of their reports were negative, they were welcomed proudly by their families.
Rutuwal Navle on achieving the unprecedented task says, “After putting on the PPE kit on the first day, I realised how difficult the task would be!” However, on completing the three-day task, he adds, “Today I received a report, the mail in the beginning addressed us as ‘Corona Warrior’. I could immediately recall the words of Sarsanghchalak Mohan Ji Bhagwat. He had said that after a little training, the Sangh swayamsevaks would be able to work with our soldiers. This was an example of that! Hundreds of Sangh swayamsevaks jumped on for the humongous task despite knowing that their lives were in danger, and no one boasts of what they have done.”
Another swayamsevak involved in the activity says, “It should be mentioned here that without any discrimination as Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, Christians, Jews, Sikhs, Sangh swayamsevaks are working relentlessly! Because Sangh’s thought process is of ‘Sanatani Hindu’ this thought is ingrained in the minds of each and every Swayamsevak. On the ideas of ‘Nation First’ and ‘Brotherhood’ youths have jumped on to this big Ship named ‘Seva’ amid an infinite ocean of Corona! At last, I would say just one thing, let anyone think whatever they want to but on doing this activity, I remember a Geet which says, ‘’ (Seva is a ‘Yadnyakund or Sacred fire’, we (Syayamsevaks) would burn like the sacrificial woods.)”
Swayamsevaks of RSS attends daily ‘Shakhas’ which forms the energy source of all their activities. The activities in a Shakha can be mainly divided into ‘Sharirik’ and ‘Bauddhik’. In ‘Sharirik’ part of improving upon one’s inner and outer strength, ‘Pranamyam’, ‘Suryanamaskar’ and physical exercises are held while in ‘Bauddhik’ Subhashits, poems and verses are sung. The following verse sung in daily Shakha is imprinted on the minds of Syayamsevaks,

Amid humid conditions and the thronged slums everyone inspired themselves through the verse and thought this was the time to live and die for the motherland, remembering the Chhatrapati, Swayamsevaks fearlessly achieved this unprecedented feat of countering the COVID-19 virus in the battlefield of containment zones of Pune.

Rahul Gandhi had held an online ‘press conference’ yesterday where he had ended up creating a massive political controversy, albeit unintended. When asked about the Coronavirus pandemic and its spread in Maharashtra, the former Congress president had stated that his party is not the key decision-maker in Maharashtra.
Responding to the question, Rahul Gandhi said that since Maharashtra is most connected and owing to the nature of the state, the spread of the virus in the state was inevitable. However, shielding Congress from sharing any of the governance blame, Rahul Gandhi also said that Congress is not in a decision making role in Maharashtra.
Rahul Gandhi said that there is a difference between running the government and supporting the government in the state. He said that Congress can be considered to be in a decision making role in states like Punjab, Rajasthan, and the UT of Pondicherry but not in Maharashtra.
Rahul’s response can be clearly seen in the live feed of the press conference that was shared by the official handle of the Congress party on 26 May. The Maharashtra part and the controversial comment regarding Congress comes after 33.00 minutes.

The subtle messaging of the comment was clear. Rahul Gandhi was distancing himself and his party from the coronavirus crisis in Maharashtra. Though he did say that Maharashtra being a very ‘connected’ state it is facing the worst crisis of the pandemic and hence needs the full support of the central government. He did not explain what ‘support’ was lacking by the central government. Neither did he specify that since he admitted to being in decision making roles in Punjab and Rajasthan, are they taking the full support of the central government or fighting the pandemic on their own.Aditya Raj Kaul✔

Congress swings to damage control mode
Soon after Rahul Gandhi’s comments made headlines for reasons not intended by the Congress, the party swung into damage control mode. Maharashtra Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat stated to the media that all was well in the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance and they do not have a problem with the Uddhav government.Not just the party, even mediapersons jumped to issue clarifications and ‘explain’ what ‘he actually meant’.

Seeing the controversy and the media debates over the fragility of the MVA alliance in Maharashtra, Rahul had shared a short video clip with the text, “Watch this video to see how paid media distorts the truth to serve their masters and distract attention from REAL issues.”However, Rahul’s video clip was from the part between 33.58 seconds mark from the original live stream, where he says that “Maharashtra is struggling because of the nature of its connectivity.”
The entire part of the Congress just ‘supporting’ the government and not being the key decision-maker was left out in the clip. So basically, Rahul had edited the controversial part out and claimed that there was no controversy. Some journalists even tried to point it out to him.

It is not clear what exactly is Rahul Gandhi trying to prove by claiming he never said what the media is ‘claiming’ he did. Is he denying his own press conference? Though Rahul Gandhi telling blatant lies is rather usual, Rahul Gandhi denying the statements made in his own press conference is rather amusing.

####It is apparent that the Congress party, headed by Sonia and Rahul Gandhi are all set to pin the blame of the COVID-19 mess in Maharashtra squarely on Uddhav Thackeray, who had compromised not only politically but also ideologically in his greed for the Chief Minister's chair while forming an alliance with Congress and NCP.

The state now contributes over a third of the Coronavirus cases in the entire country, with Mumbai being most severely affected. While Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has drawn sharp criticism for his handling of the Coronavirus pandemic, Rahul Gandhi, during a press interaction today distanced Congress from the mess being created in the alliance government ruled state.
Maharashtra, which is currently being ruled by an alliance government of Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena, with a Shiv Sena chief minister has now squarely been abandoned by the Congress. Today, during a press conference held by Rahul Gandhi, he was asked about the Coronavirus pandemic and its spread in Maharashtra.

While distancing himself from the mess in Maharashtra, Rahul Gandhi also tried to shield his ally, Shiv Sena, by saying that the central government must extend every possible help to the state of Maharashtra in fighting the Coronavirus pandemic. He also said that Maharashtra is fighting a difficult battle, as are many other states, and there should be full support to the state and its people.
Effectively, what Rahul Gandhi seems to have done is put the entire onus of the mess on Shiv Sena and distance his own party, Congress, from the misgovernance the state has seen so far. This claim rings hollow considering Congress has several important ministries in Maharashtra including Education, energy, public works, revenue etc. For Rahul Gandhi to say that Congress is not a key decision maker in Maharashtra is a shoddy attempt of shielding his party from partaking in the misgovernance that has marred the state during the pandemic.
Either way, the undercurrent of Congress trying to distance itself from Maharashtra governance has been rather clear even before Rahul Gandhi spoke up.
Only recently, Sanjay Nirupam had tweeting exposing the abysmal condition of hospitals in Maharashtra amidst the Coronavirus crisis. Nirupam tweeted, “After Sion hospital, this is Rajawadi hospital of Ghatkopar where dead body is lying for hours in an open patient ward.#BMC officials incharge particularly the dean of the hospital must be sacked immediately for this inhuman act”. He followed his tweet up with the hashtag “shameful”.

Unfortunately, lots of people have lost their lives and many of them are feared in the situation. However, certain sons of the soil even in the worrisome situation are repaying their debts on motherland by owning up the sacred duty of combating the virus and rescuing their brothers and sisters of the land. The sons of the motherland are non-other than the Swayamsevaks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
In the pandemic, Pune, the city of happiness has also been swallowed up by the deadly virus. Till now, 3000+ cases were reported in the city. Under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), doctors, nurses and paramedical staff have controlled the pandemic outbreak; however, the task is too strainful. Hence, to aid the PMC doctors, swayamsevaks composed themselves to counter the Corona Virus in the containment zones (Hotspots) of the slum areas in Pune. The promising aspect for the nation is that most of the swayamsevaks involved in this task were youths. Interestingly, the parents of youth swayamsevaks like Rutuwal Navle happily granted permission for the cause.
The necessary arrangements of swayamsevaks were made in the hostels of Abasaheb Garware College, Pune and then the swayamsevaks were medically checked-up before their involvement. Under the expertise of doctors of various leading hospitals, the swayamsevaks were trained about the use of PPE, Infrared Thermometers et al. To boost morale and immunity power, ‘Shakhas’ involving physical exercises, Pranayam, Suryanamaskar was held early morning daily. Finally, on April 28, the Corona ‘Yoddhas,’ i.e. PMC doctors along with swayamsevaks set out to defeat the virus in the battleground.
In these red zones, many were found to be positives, and a lot of them were kept in segregation centres. Every man was screened and recorded in the slums, body temperatures were checked, everyone was asked some questions and if required masks were provided. If some citizens were found to be different, they were marked and listed, necessary medicines were provided and the norms related to social distancing were explained. Screening in such slum areas showed that people were living in a congested manner in each house, few of them believed in wrong rumours and feared to come out openly however many citizens considering the seriousness of situation cooperated the doctors and swayamsevaks.

Screening in the scorching heat of more than 40-degree Celsius and the narrow lanes of slum meant utmost dedication and minute level of precautionary measures. Hence, the PMC ensured that at the end of the day, small parts of PPE kits were sanitised and necessary measures were taken for the swayamsevaks. |
Rutuwal Navle on achieving the unprecedented task says, “After putting on the PPE kit on the first day, I realised how difficult the task would be!” However, on completing the three-day task, he adds, “Today I received a report, the mail in the beginning addressed us as ‘Corona Warrior’. I could immediately recall the words of Sarsanghchalak Mohan Ji Bhagwat. He had said that after a little training, the Sangh swayamsevaks would be able to work with our soldiers. This was an example of that! Hundreds of Sangh swayamsevaks jumped on for the humongous task despite knowing that their lives were in danger, and no one boasts of what they have done.”
Another swayamsevak involved in the activity says, “It should be mentioned here that without any discrimination as Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, Christians, Jews, Sikhs, Sangh swayamsevaks are working relentlessly! Because Sangh’s thought process is of ‘Sanatani Hindu’ this thought is ingrained in the minds of each and every Swayamsevak. On the ideas of ‘Nation First’ and ‘Brotherhood’ youths have jumped on to this big Ship named ‘Seva’ amid an infinite ocean of Corona! At last, I would say just one thing, let anyone think whatever they want to but on doing this activity, I remember a Geet which says, ‘’ (Seva is a ‘Yadnyakund or Sacred fire’, we (Syayamsevaks) would burn like the sacrificial woods.)”

Swayamsevaks of RSS attends daily ‘Shakhas’ which forms the energy source of all their activities. The activities in a Shakha can be mainly divided into ‘Sharirik’ and ‘Bauddhik’. In ‘Sharirik’ part of improving upon one’s inner and outer strength, ‘Pranamyam’, ‘Suryanamaskar’ and physical exercises are held while in ‘Bauddhik’ Subhashits, poems and verses are sung. The following verse sung in daily Shakha is imprinted on the minds of Syayamsevaks,
(One has to live for the nation, Shivba (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj) has called upon us that if time demands one should sacrifice himself for the nation)
Amid humid conditions and the thronged slums everyone inspired themselves through the verse and thought this was the time to live and die for the motherland, remembering the Chhatrapati, Swayamsevaks fearlessly achieved this unprecedented feat of countering the COVID-19 virus in the battlefield of containment zones of Pune.
