#A life of selfless service: India’s Pradhan SevakNarendra Modi

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"From wiping out the nation’s enemies on foreign soil to steering 1.3 billion Indians through an unforgiving global pandemic, Narendra Modi has led the nation with boldness and compassion."

Born into humble beginnings to a family of grocers in Mehsana district (present-day Gujarat) of erstwhile Bombay state, Narendra Damodardas Modi’s story is one of true inspiration.

On 17th September 2021, India’s ‘Pradhan Sevak’ enters his 71st year. Our party launched ‘Seva and Samarpan Abhiyan’ to mark the great man’s 20 years in public service. Although the number of years in public service is 20, it is safe to say that the man’s whole life has been of selfless service.

This piece is a simple attempt to briefly shed light on certain aspects of the man’s decades-long journey.

1.#Humble beginnings, introduction to RSS :

At the tender age of 8, a young Modi, who by then was already a budding debater, got introduced to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and began attending its local training sessions. This influence would go on to shape his whole journey. Having got inducted as a balswayamsevak (Junior cadet) under the tutelage of Lakshmanrao Inamdar @Vakil Saheb, Modi commenced his journey in the organisation, which holds service for the nation as the utmost priority in its agenda.

2.#A young Modi; becoming a full-time Pracharak :

He travelled all across northern and North Eastern India in his youth, visiting Hindu ashrams founded by Swami Vivekananda, who has always remained an immense influence in his life and work.

At 21, he joined a Jana Sangh ‘Satyagraha’ in Delhi led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee to enlist for the battlefield in the 1971 Indo Pakistan war. However, this valiant act got him into jail for a brief period as the then central govt had disallowed open support to the Mukti Bhani. After the 1971 war, he became a full-time RSS Pracharak.

3.#Emergency, evading arrests :

During the infamous Emergency, Modi was general secretary of an RSS committee coordinating opposition to the emergency in Gujarat. As the RSS was declared a banned outfit during the period, he was compelled to go underground and frequently travelled in disguise to evade unlawful arrests. In his many disguises (which are well documented), he even dressed as a monk and once as a Sikh. After the emergency, in 1978, Modi became a regional organiser in the RSS, overseeing its activities in Surat, Vadodara.

4.#BJP: a new calling :

In 1985, he was assigned to the BJP.  His unparalleled political acumen was first seen in the 1986 Ahmedabad Municipal Elections, which BJP won comfortably.

The following year, he was elected Organising Secretary of the party’s Gujarat unit. His rise did not stop there. In 1990, he was named a member of the BJP’s national election committee, playing key roles in organising L.K. Advani’s ‘Ram Yath Ratra’ (1990) and Murli Manohar Joshi’s ‘Ekta Yatra’ (Journey for Unity; 1991-92).

In 1992, he took a short hiatus from active politics instead of focusing on establishing a school in Ahmedabad.

However, a man of such qualities could not be kept away from the service domain for long. In 1994, he returned to electoral politics, and his strategies were considered imperative to the party’s victory in the 1995 state assembly elections. The following year, he was elected National Secretary of the party and gan to look after the party’s affairs in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

In 1998, with his responsibilities in the election committee for the 1998 assembly elections in Gujarat, his actions were crucial in ending the factional divisions within the party. His strategy was also credited with the party securing an overall majority in that election.

Following this, he was promoted to BJP General Secretary (Organisation).

5.#As Gujarat CM :

In 2001, Gujarat came calling; this time, the calling was different from those he had received earlier in his political journey. Modi was a man in demand. He was to take full responsibility for Gujarat; as its Chief Minister.

Moreover, Gujarat was a wounded state at the time due to the Bhuj Earthquake. The central leadership deemed Modi as the perfect man to heal the state and its people from the turmoil and wounds of the Bhuj disaster. On 7th October 2001, he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

6.#Gujarat Riots, Rajdharma :

The 2002 Gujarat Riots. A stern test of leadership and character which any other man or woman in his position would have certainly failed. But failure was not an option for Modi Ji.

Modi, by then, was already known for his ability to tread choppy political waters with tact and aplomb. But this was beyond politics. It was a test of humanity. Here he showed his other side, being a brother, son, friend, father to those affected by the three-day horrors of violence. His touch with the ground realities ensured that Gujarat healed together. Here, he had expressed and performed ‘Rajdharma’ of the highest order.

In the 2002 elections in Gujarat, the BJP retained power under Modi’s leadership with a thumping majority, winning 127 out of the 182 seats in the state assembly.

7.#Gujarat and the growth journey :

Under his leadership, Gujarat embarked on a journey of growth and economic development. Ranging from groundwater conservation to investor-friendly policies, the state reached great heights.

Having been an active environmental activist for decades, I cannot help but admire Gujarat’s trajectory of progress in its groundwater conservation journey during Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister. Support to the NGOs of the field was a unique but much-needed element. By December 2008, half a million structures had been built, of which 1,13,738 were check dams; to recharge aquifers. 60 of 112 tehsils which had depleted the water table in 2004 had regained their normal groundwater levels by 2011. This resulted in the state’s production of genetically modified cotton becoming the largest in the country. From 2001 to 2010, the state’s agricultural growth rate was recorded at 10.97 per cent, the highest of any state.

Adding another feather to his cap of being a pro-investment leader was Tata’s decision to shift production of its Nano car from West Bengal to Gujarat in 2008. Many companies soon followed Tata to Gujarat.

Detractors wildly accuse our Prime Minister of being ‘anti farmer’, an accusation which reeks of absurdity in all sense. His actions and policies as Chief Minister of Gujarat and Prime Minister of our nation prove how close he holds the nation’s farmers to his heart. An example: Under his Chief Ministership in Gujarat, agricultural electricity was separated from other rural electricity; the former was rationed to fit scheduled irrigation demands, reducing its cost. This greatly assisted farmers in reducing their production costs.

Gujarat topped the World Bank’s “ease of doing business” rankings among Indian states for two consecutive years. In 2013, the state ranked first among Indian states for “economic freedom” by a report measured on governance, growth, citizens’ rights and labour and business regulations among the country’s 20 largest states.

With his service for the state and its people, he had catapulted Gujarat into the highest echelons of every parameter used to measure a state’s growth. Delhi came calling.

8.#Making Indians believe again :

The UPA’s second term and its endless scandals, controversies had made Indians lose faith in its leaders and the democratic apparatus. By 2012, it was clear that the BJP was the only credible choice to replace Congress and its allies in the 2014 general elections.

But every winning team needs its talisman, a unifying force capable of inducing conviction among its teammates.

Narendra Modi was the perfect fit to lead the NDA back to power. The NDA, led by the BJP, returned to power with a thumping majority. What followed is well documented and well known to all.

An India that is bold, decisive and unflinchingly poised in the face of adversity is one that was envisioned by Bose, Mukherjee, Vajpayee etc. Narendra Modi shares that very same vision, and the India that has been taking shape since the NDA came back to power under his leadership is ample proof. From wiping out the nation’s enemies on foreign soil to steering 1.3 billion Indians through an unforgiving global pandemic, Narendra Modi has led the nation with boldness and compassion. From driving daggers through the spine of black money holders to celebrating Diwali with the nation’s brave soldiers at the border, Narendra Modi exudes extreme love for his nation and its people.

Greatness comes in many forms. One that is of service and sacrifice is of the highest form. Narendra Modi Damodardas Modi, India’s ‘Pradhan Sevak’, lives and breathes for service to his nation. Nothing can be more exemplary.

##Indic Wisdom: Adhyaatm, Rashtra and Desh

Our transformation into Rashtra-Bhakt requires higher consciousness, commitment and sacrifice. We need to involve ourselves in incessant dialogue. Indic spirituality endowed with eternal consciousness is that elan vital which empowers this transformation

When wisdom prevails then alone one finds oneself eternal in one’s consciousness. Becoming conduit in imparting the same eternal consciousness to one and all is Param-Uattardaayitva (most responsible duty). It is Param-Uattardaayitva because attaining to eternal consciousness is janma-siddha-adhikaar (birthright) of each and every earthling. This right to self-realisation (aatm-saakshaatkaar) must stay intact, even if all ascribed identities are transcended in this process, so be it.

Becoming helpful in attainment of eternal consciousness is the most fulfilling experience for both precisely, ones who become means of helping as well as, the ones who receive help in attaining self-realisation.

In Bharat many guru-shishya parampara (living traditions) have been imparting spiritual transmission since eons. Vedic, Upanishadic, epic, and Puranic period literature have umpteen examples mentioning the continuity of tradition of spiritual transmission. It was not very long ago that Ramakrishna Paramhans, Raman Maharshi, Ramchandra…  were discovered by seekers as conduits who imparted spiritual transmission while they were very much living amongst us. But, in numbers, more people know more about living gurus only when they are no more. This is also true that we don’t come to know even that much about our gurus as much would have been possible for us to know because, in whom we as seekers find our guru, they never see themselves as guru. That’s how eternal beauty and purity of this relationship stays sacrosanct, untouched by the false-ego. It is always the prerogative of disciples and initiates alone to acknowledge, reiterate and assert the presence of the living guru so that maximum number of really thirsty hearts are satiated. Spiritual gurus are undoubtedly in unison with one and all as, realising innate union is the first step even at the level of seeking (mumukshutva). Therefore, more the number of attained ones more helpful it proves in spiritual evolution of the individuals, the world and the universe.

And, to facilitate the cause of spiritualisation of the globe devising yogic-Kriya is such a necessity that it would have to be filled by gurus consistently in all times to come. A yogic Kriya suited to all householders in their present-day-life-circumstances is a constant pursuit. It is a constant pursuit because life-circumstances are changing at a fast pace. And after a certain time it becomes necessary to devise path and kriya to accommodate all earthlings.  Excellence in the spiritual path is thus attained by individuals. And, pious flame of spiritual fire stays burning in one or the other heart incessantly.

It is the ‘potential-capability’ of yogic transmission of the ones who are destined to become conduit of devising such kriyas that acts as the root force in keeping it efficacious.

Every Upanishad is living evidence that Vedic period seers have given us many ways of tuning to higher consciousness. This manifestation of diversity in terms of paths and, unity/union/unison of destination is key to realise that ultimate openness which is innate to spiritual realisation.

Looking at the world map we find that India is uniquely spiritual motherland. Our varied religious/ethnic backgrounds shouldn’t become a restricting factor in glorifying this spiritual uniqueness. Ideally, it should be a facilitating factor as diversity provides us with ample amount of variety to have a richer dialogue.

It is important that we stay as living example of a society (Rashtra) in which dialogue flourishes. Bravely discarding and demolishing all outside influences which are intended to break Indic self-confidence by demeaning Indic glory or praising barbaric events taking place in the name of religion, race and ethnicity.

"Looking at the world map we find that India is uniquely spiritual motherland. Our varied religious/ethnic backgrounds shouldn’t become a restricting factor in glorifying this spiritual uniqueness Ideally, it should be a facilitating factor as diversity provides us with ample amount of variety to have a richer dialogue"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

None is suggesting that we should become complacent by rejoicing in past achievements. Suggestion is that we should remember our glorious heritage of sanaatan-jeevan-mulya (eternal divine values)  and gain that confidence which is a prerequisite to take a quantum leap on the path of progress in the present time.

Every conscientious (naitik) person who lives in a country is bound to be a patriot, isn’t it the minimum civic behaviour anticipated from each one of us? However, our transformation into Rashtra-Bhakt requires higher consciousness, commitment and sacrifice. And, it is not our keeping quiet and speaking selectively that will make one and all transform from patriot to Rashtra-premi but involving ourselves in incessant dialogue will definitely do it. And, Indic Spirituality endowed with eternal consciousness is that elan vital which empowers aforesaid transformation.

###Lessons From 1921 Malabar Hindu Genocide
###September 25 is observed as Tuvvur Hindu massacre Day
----------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------

This is the 100th year of the flagrant Hindu genocide in Malabar in 1921.  Although the Congress, led by Mahatmaji, supported the anti-British pan-Islamic movement launched by a section of Muslims around the world to restore the power of the caliph, the Sultan of Turkey, to open a new path of Hindu-Muslim unity, in Bharat, it also led to flagrant Hindu persecution in the Muslim-majority areas of Ernadu, Walluvanad, Ponnani and Kozhikode taluks of Malabar in Kerala.  Many, such as Dr Ambedkar stated that the Mappila riots later evolved into a political ideology and program to cut off Bharat in the name of religion.

It took five months(1921 - Aug. 20 to Jan. 20, 1922) for the British government to overthrow the rebels and restore rule of Law in the areas where the independent Islamic State (Khilafat) had been declared.  More than 10,000 Hindus were brutally murdered.  About one lakh Hindus had to give up everything and flee.  Of these, only about 40,000 refugees have found some relief in refugee camps set up by various movements and local kings, such as the Arya Samaj, the Servant of India Society and Zamurin of Kozhikode.  Those who are forcibly converted do not count at all. Records show that close to 3,000 Hindu brothers and sisters who converted to Islam were able to return to Swadharma through the Arya Samaj-initiated purification(shuddhi) activities.  Everyone who visited the site noted that there was not a single Hindu house or temple that was not destroyed in the riot-hit area.  There will be between 300 and 500 completely destroyed temples.  The atrocities committed against women are beyond words.  Dr. Anne Basant, who visited Malabar on the instructions of the Congress, wrote that Malabar has taught us what the Khilafat Kingdom (Islamic rule) still means and She further states that we don't want to see another specimen of the khilafat Raj in Bharat(The Future of Indian politics, page 304 ) Inspired by Sree Narayana Guru, the hero of the renaissance of Kerala, Sri. N . Kumaran Ashan, the first General Secretary of the SNDP and the great Malayalam poet, brings out a direct picture of the Mappila riots in his masterpiece Duravastha.

Variam Kunnath Kunhahammad Haji was the supreme rebel leader who led the Khilafat regime.  Khilafat rule was carried out by his governors, soldiers and Shariah courts. The real picture of that caliphate rule can be found in many historical books and memoirs of that time.  The Tuvvur massacre is a typical example of the Khilafat court and its brutal punishment.

The massacre took place on September 24 and 25 of 1921 in Thuvur, East Ernad of Malabar, under the leadership of Varian Kunnan and Chembrasseri Thangal.  The poor Hindus, those who couldn't flee even after the month-long riot, on charges of aiding the army, were brought out of home, detained and executed by Islamic trials.  The law stated that if one confessed, pleaded guilty, converted to Islam and joined the Khilafat army, his life would be freed.  They declared that only one religion is enough in the independent kingdom.  Or one can live subject to Islamic religious rule and the Death penalty for non-compliance.

The death penalty was imposed on those who refused to convert and stand firm. The Taliban are ashamed to the brutalities committed by these Moplahs like immersing the kafir  in boiling water, mutilate their bodies one by one, tie their hands together, hang themselves alive, smash their shoulders, split their bodies in half, split their heads in half with a timber cutting saw.  They did not spare the Muslim brothers who sympathized with the Hindus.  Varian Kunnan ordered the temple priests to be beheaded by Chembrasseri Tangal himself.  The Shariah court sentenced 36 people to death in a well in Tuvvur, Pangode.  It had 2 moplahs and 3 pujaris.  The rest are ordinary Hindus.  Many died half-alive lying in the grave for many days. It is said that the cry was heard for days.  There are also testimonies that someone was sparing from the top again with bamboo shoots.  The outside world heard these cruelties after many days.

Pandit Rishi Ram Ji for the Arya Samaj, E. Rama Menon BA for the Central Committee, Devdhar for the Service India Society, K. Madhavan Nair and Srinivasa Sastri For the Congress later visited the site and took evidence.  Later Variamkunnan's accomplices Chembassery Thangal, Impichi Koya Thangal, Achuthodi Kunjappi and Kozhissery Mammad alias Amakundan Mammad were sentenced to death by the special tribunal under sections 121,110 and 302 of the Indian Penal Code.  A Mappila Witness in the case himself describes the mentality of the riot leaders who laughed and rejoiced at the plight of the poor who were murdered and hacked to death.

The lesson we have to understand is that such heinous killings should not be repeated anywhere in the world, not in India.   The area, which was left uninhabitable by the local Muslim population, for many decades  is being bought by outsiders with the backing of some militant groups. Not only that, the well which is filled with mud, and buildings are being constructed in such a way that even its remnants are unrecognizable. It is a great crime against history. It has the covert and overt support of the administration.

At the same time, with the support of the state government, the district administration has announced plans worth crores of rupees to build monuments and museums in the name of the riot leaders Variyan Kunnan and others, whitewashing into super heroes of the freedom movement, during this  Amrita Mahotsav year of independence.

Our forefathers, who were martyred by the Mappila rebels in many wells and ponds, including the Tuvvur well, were heroes who sacrificed their lives to live a religious life of their choice in their own land.  Gandhiji demanded that Hindus should develop the strength and courage to die before giving in to forced conversion.  Moreover, Gandhiji says that he was proud of the Hindus who thought that it was better to pave the way for the use of Mappilas' ax than to pave the way for forced conversion. (Young India - 1922 Jan 26) Yes, they were the real martyrs of the freedom movement.  Their memories and monuments should come up.

One hundred years later, it is the duty of human lovers today to pay tribute to those martyrs.  It is an atonement for a mistake made some 100 years ago.  We must be prepared to move forward with the realization that we are Bharatiyas beyond caste, religion and language and to warn the divisive forces that are trying to sow the seeds of division among us.  This remembrance is also to call out that no more power can destroy or weaken us.  History should not distort to soothe somebody or something.  The mistake that happened yesterday needs to be corrected.  In that belief, we must learn the lessons of the shadow cast over the national freedom struggle - the Mappila riots in Malabar, recognize the ideology sown to cut off the country in the name of religion, and be careful not to allow it to grow any further.  We must be able to move forward by respecting the different movements of the freedom struggle and by fostering an unwavering commitment to the motherland, culture and heritage that inspired them all.  The Amrita Mahotsava of Independence should be taken as an opportunity to remember the forgotten, despised and courageous patriots and to perpetuate their motivation.  Through such projects, let us work together to prepare the new generation to dedicate themselves to the creation of a new India.
