Kottayam: Union Minister, Ministry of Culture; Ministry of Tourism; and Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Shri G Kishan Reddy unveiled the statue of Vaikom Padmanabha Pillai, who is known as the Lion of Travancore, at Gandhi Smrithi Bhawan, Kottayam in Kerala on June 26.

“Vaikom Padmanabha Pillai was a brave fighter, and used traditional martial art of Kerala, Kalaripayat to fight against the national enemies. He also played a key role in defeating Tipu Sultan,” Shri Kishan Reddy said.

In his address, the Union Minister emphasised on the need to celebrate and showcase the lives of unsung heroes of our freedom struggle and how the Union Government is commemorating it through Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Vaikom Padmanabha Pillai (1767–1809) was the commander of the army of the erstwhile Travancore kingdom. He ambushed the huge Mysore Army in the Nedumkotta fortifications in December 1789. According to history, “the Battle of Nedumkotta was one of the most daring attacks in the history of Travancore kingdom, in which a handful of fighters infiltrated a well-equipped enemy army and successfully made them retract.” In this attack, Tipu was seriously wounded and went permanently lame.

After their defeat, Mysore army attacked the fort again in 1790. During the second Battle of Nedumkotta, Padmanabha Pillai and fellow soldier Kunji Kutty Pillai deluged Tipu’s army by breaking the walls of a dam at Bhoothathankettu causing heavy flash floods downstream Periyar River. As a result of this tactical move, a large part of Tipu’s infantry was washed away and all the ammunition and gunpowder got wet and Tipu was forced to retreat.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri J Nandakumar, national convenor, Prajna Pravah, said that if Vaikom Padmanabha Pillai did not fight and defeat Tipu, the tyrant of Mysore, the history of Travancore would have been disastrous. “Had Vaikkom Padmanabha Pillai not been there, Travancore would have turned out to be another Malabar, a stage for yet another Hindu genocide,” said Shri Nandakumar.

Shri Nandakumar also remembered Padmanabha Pillai’s role in the Travancore’s fight against the British. “A great freedom fighter, Padmanabha Pillai, along with Veera Velu Thampi Dalawa, attacked the British Resident Col. Macaulay in 1808. In fact, Padmanabha Pillai was the one who led the attack against Col. Macaulay. But, history did not give him his due only because he defeated Tipu. Leftist historians did not want the vanquisher of Tipu to be celebrated as a great freedom fighter,” he added.

After the aborted attempt at killing Macaulay, Padmanabha Pillai ambushed a party of British soldiers at Pallathuruthy near Alappuzha, in which 13 British soldiers were massacred. His aborted attempt at assassinating Col. Macaulay and the killing of British soldiers resulted in his arrest and public hanging in 1809.

New Delhi: Leftist propaganda website Alt News’s co-founder and alleged fake news peddler Mohammed Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police today on charges of ‘promoting enmity’.

According to a tweet posted by fellow Alt News co-founder Pratik Sinha, Mohammed Zubair had been arrested at around 6:45 pm after being summoned by the Special Cell for investigation in a 2020 case.

Police said Zubair was arrested “after having sufficient evidence on record”. He is being produced before the duty magistrate for seeking further PC remand, the police added.

According to reports, Zubair has been charged under sections 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot—if rioting be committed—if not committed) and 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code.

“Zubair was called today by special cell, Delhi for investigation in a 2020 case for which he already had a protection against arrest from High Court. However, today at around 6.45pm we were told he has been arrested in some other FIR for which no notice was given which is mandatory under law for the Sections under which he has been arrested. Nor FIR copy is being given to us despite repeated requests,” Sinha alleged in a tweet.

Zubair was one who dog whistled fellow Islamists to issue rape and death threats to BJP National Spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

On May 27, Islamist Zubair shared a video clip of Sharma’s TV debate on Twitter with a twisted comment. Getting a cue, Islamists jumped on Sharma’s Twitter timeline with multiple death and rape threats. She shared a few screenshots from her DM (messaging service of Twitter) also where she had received rape and death threats.

The Allahabad High Court dismissed the plea by the Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair challenging the FIR lodged against him for a tweet earlier this month. In his tweet, Zubair called 3 Hindu saints, Yati Narasimhanand Saraswati, Bajrang Muni and Anand Swaroop, ‘HateMongers’. Earlier this month, Zubair was booked by the Uttar Pradesh Police under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

After Allahabad High Court refused to quash FIR filed against him, Alt News Co-Founder and alleged fake news peddler Mohammed Zubair deleted his Facebook account.
