​Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has arrived in Addis Ababa on his first bilateral visit to Ethiopia. On arrival at the airport, in a warm and special gesture, he was received by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali and accorded a warm and colorful welcome.

India and Ethiopia share historical relations anchored in strong people-to-people ties. The special gesture by the Ethiopian leadership is reflective of the importance the two countries attach to each other as Global South partners.

Excellency, My Brother, My Friend,

इथियोपिया की यात्रा करके सच में मुझे बहुत खुशी हो रही है। यह इथियोपिया का मेरा पहला दौरा है। लेकिन यहां कदम रखते ही मुझे अपनेपन और गहरी आत्मीयता का, उसका बहुत गहरा अनुभव हुआ है। भारत और इथियोपिया के बीच हजारों वर्षों से निरंतर संपर्क, संवाद और आदान- प्रदान होता रहा है। अनेक भाषाओं और समृद्ध परंपराओं से संपन्न हमारे दोनों देश विविधता में एकता का प्रतीक है। दोनों देश शांति और मानव कल्याण के प्रति प्रतिबद्ध लोकतांत्रिक शक्तियां हैं। हम ग्लोबल साउथ के सहयात्री भी हैं, और साझेदार भी हैं। अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंचों पर भी हम कंधे से कंधा मिलाकर खड़े रहे हैं।

अफ्रीकन यूनियन का मुख्यालय इथियोपिया में होना, इथियोपिया को अफ्रीकी डिप्लोमेसी का मीटिंग पॉइंट बनाता है। एक समावेशी विश्व, इंक्लूसिव वर्ल्ड के साझा विज़न से प्रेरित होकर भारत ने 2023 में यह सुनिश्चित किया कि अफ्रीकी यूनियन जी-20 का सदस्य बने। इन्हीं सभी पहलुओं को ध्यान में रखते हुए, आज हम भारत इथियोपिया संबंधों को स्ट्रेटेजिक पार्टनरशिप पर, उस स्तर पर ले जा रहे हैं। यह कदम हमारे संबंधों को नई ऊर्जा, नई गति और नई गहराई प्रदान करेगा।

भविष्य की अपार संभावनाओं को साकार करने के लिए एक स्पष्ट रोडमैप तैयार होगा। आज हमें हमारे सहयोग के प्रमुख आयामों जैसे इकोनॉमी, इनोवेशन, टेक्नोलॉजी, डिफेंस, हेल्थ, कैपेसिटी बिल्डिंग और मल्टीलेटरल को-ऑपरेशन पर विचार-विमर्श करने का मौका मिला। मुझे खुशी है कि आज हमने भारत में इथियोपिया के लिए स्टूडेंट स्कॉलरशिप को डबल करने का निर्णय लिया है।

आज इथियोपिया की महान धरती पर आप सबके बीच होना मेरे लिए सौभाग्य की बात है। मैंने आज दोपहर ही इथियोपिया में कदम रखा है, और आते ही मुझे यहाँ के लोगों से एक अद्भुत अपनापन और आत्मीयता मिली है, प्रधानमंत्री जी स्वयं मुझे एयरपोर्ट पर लेने आए, फ्रेंडशिप पार्क और साइंस म्यूज़ियम लेकर गए।


आज शाम यहाँ की लीडरशिप से मेरी महत्वपूर्ण विषयों पर चर्चा हुई है, ये सब अपने आप में एक अविस्मरणीय अनुभव है।

भी-अभी मुझे ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia’ के रूप में, इस देश का सर्वोच्च सम्मान प्रदान किया गया है। विश्व की अति-प्राचीन और समृद्ध सभ्यता द्वारा सम्मानित किया जाना, मेरे लिए बहुत गौरव की बात है। मैं सभी भारतवासियों की ओर से इस सम्मान को पूरी विनम्रता और कृतज्ञता से ग्रहण करता हूँ ।

यह सम्मान उन अनगिनत भारतीयों का है जिन्होंने हमारी साझेदारी को आकार दिया—

पिछले महीने जब हम साउथ अफ्रीका में G20 समिट के दौरान मिले थे, तो आपने बहुत स्नेह और अधिकार से मुझसे इथियोपिया की यात्रा करने का आग्रह किया था। मैं अपने मित्र, अपने भाई का ये स्नेह-निमंत्रण भला कैसे टाल सकता था। इसीलिए पहला मौका मिलते ही, मैंने इथियोपिया आने का निश्चय किया।

ये विज़िट अगर नॉर्मल डिप्लमैटिक तौर तरीके से होती तो शायद बहुत समय लग जाता। लेकिन आप लोगों का यही प्यार और अपनापन मुझे, 24 ही दिन में यहाँ खींच लाया।

आज जब पूरे विश्व की नजर ग्लोबल साउथ पर है, ऐसे में इथियोपिया की स्वाभिमान, स्वतंत्रता, और आत्मगौरव की चिरकालीन परंपरा हम सभी के लिए सशक्त प्रेरणा है। ये सौभाग्य की बात है कि इस महत्वपूर्ण कालखंड में इथियोपिया की बागडोर डॉ अबी के कुशल हाथों में हैं।

अपने “मेडेमर” की सोच और विकास के संकल्प के साथ, वे जिस तरह से इथियोपिया को प्रगति पथ पर आगे ले जा रहे हैं, वह पूरे विश्व के लिए एक उज्जवल उदाहरण है। पर्यावरण संरक्षण हो, इन्क्लूसिव डेवलपमेंट हो या फिर विविधता भरे समाज में एकता बढ़ाना, उनके प्रयास, प्रयत्नों और प्रतिबद्धता की मैं हृदय से सराहना करता हूँ।

भारत में हमारा मानना रहा है कि “सा विद्या, या विमुक्तये”। यानि knowledge liberates.

शिक्षा किसी भी राष्ट्र की आधारशिला है, और मुझे गर्व है कि इथियोपिया और भारत के संबंधों में सबसे बड़ा योगदान हमारे शिक्षकों का रहा है। इथियोपिया की महान संस्कृति ने इन्हे यहाँ आकर्षित किया और उन्हे यहाँ के कई पीढ़ियों को तैयार करने का सौभाग्य मिला। आज भी कई Indian Faculty Members Ethiopian Universities और Higher Educational Institutions में अपनी सेवाएं दे रहे हैं।

भविष्य उन्हीं partnerships का होता है जो विज़न और भरोसे पर आधारित हों। हम इथियोपिया के साथ मिलकर ऐसे सहयोग को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध हैं जो बदलती वैश्विक चुनौतियों का समाधान भी करे और नई संभावनाओं का निर्माण भी।

​Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is paying his first bilateral visit to Ethiopia from 16-17 December 2025. In a special ceremony hosted at the Addis International Convention Centre today, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed conferred the highest award of Ethiopia the ‘Great Honor Nishan of Ethiopia’ upon Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for his exceptional contribution towards strengthening India-Ethiopia partnership and for his visionary leadership as a global statesman.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Modi noted that it was an honor for him to accept the award from one of most ancient civilizations of the world, and he did so with a deep sense of humility and gratitude. Prime Minister Modi expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Dr. Abiy and the people of Ethiopia for this honour. He expressed appreciation for the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Abiy and his initiatives to promote national unity, sustainability, and inclusive development. Underlining the salience of knowledge for nation building, Prime Minister Modi stated that it was a privilege for Indian teachers for over a century now to contribute towards Ethiopia’s progress and development.

Prime Minister Modi dedicated the award to all those – Indians and Ethiopians – who have nurtured the bilateral ties for ages and conveyed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the 1.4 billion Indians for being bestowed with this honour. PM holds bilateral talks with the PM of Ethiopia

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met today with H. E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia at the National Palace in Addis Ababa. On arrival at the Palace, Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed and accorded a ceremonial welcome.

The two leaders met in one-on-one, restricted and delegation-level formats. They reflected upon the entire spectrum of our bilateral relationship that are based on civilizational ties built over centuries and strengthened by strong people-to-people ties. Given the importance of the relationship, the leaders agreed to elevate the India-Ethiopia ties to the level of Strategic Partnership. They noted that as Global South partners, the two countries must continue to contribute towards building an inclusive world. Prime Minister Modi underlined that it was a singular honour for India to welcome the African Union as a G20 member during its Presidency of the grouping in 2023. Prime Minister Modi thanked Ethiopia for its solidarity in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack and for strengthening the global fight against terrorism.

Both leaders took stock of the progress in the multifaceted partnership between India and Ethiopia, including in areas of trade and investment, innovation and technology, education and capacity building, and defense cooperation. Prime Minister Modi conveyed India’s willingness to step up collaboration with Ethiopia in the fields of health security, digital health, traditional medicine, Jan Aushadhi Kendra, food security, sustainable agriculture, natural farming, and Agri-tech. The leaders underscored that the close development partnership between the countries was adding value to the strong people-to-people ties.

Both leaders reviewed the economic partnership between the two countries. They discussed cooperation in the fields of Digital Public Infrastructure, mining, critical minerals and clean energy. Prime Minister Modi stated that Indian companies, as trusted partners have invested over 5 billion dollars in the Ethiopian economy, especially in essential sectors of manufacturing and pharmaceuticals, creating over 75,000 local jobs.

The two Prime Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to working together to voice the concerns of the Global South. They discussed cooperation in the multilateral arena, including the United Nations. They called for greater cooperation on issues such as climate change, renewable energy and disaster risk reduction and in this context welcomed the role of international organizations such as International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA) and International Solar Alliance (ISA). Prime Minister Modi noted that India looked forward to working with Ethiopia as BRICS partners under its presidency and for the proposed India-Africa Forum Summit.

Following the talks, the two leaders witnessed exchange of three MoUs in the fields of: United Nations Peacekeeping Operations Training; Mutual Administrative Assistance in the Customs Matters; and establishment of Data Centre at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.

Prime Minister Dr Abiy hosted a banquet in honour of Prime Minister Modi. Prime Minister Modi invited Prime Minister Dr. Abiy to visit India, which he accepted.

​Prime Minister today addressed the Joint Session of Ethiopian Parliament. This was a special honor accorded to Prime Minister who is on his first bilateral visit to Ethiopia.

Prime Minister began his address by extending greetings of friendship and goodwill from the people of India to the lawmakers of Ethiopia. He noted that it was a privilege for him to be addressing the Parliament and through this temple of democracy speaking to the common people in Ethiopia- farmers, entrepreneurs, proud women and young people who are shaping the future of the country. He thanked the people and Government of Ethiopia for bestowing on him the highest award- Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia. Given the salience of the relationship, Prime Minister expressed deep satisfaction that the age-old ties between the two countries have been elevated to a strategic partnership during the visit.

Recalling the civilizational ties between India and Ethiopia, Prime Minister underlined that both the countries combine ancient wisdom with modern ambition. In this context, he noted that India’s national song “Vande Mataram” and the Ethiopian national anthem both refer to their land as the mother. Alluding to the shared struggle of the two countries, Prime Minister highlighted the contribution of Indian soldiers who fought alongside fellow Ethiopians for their liberation in 1941. He expressed that it was an honor for him to pay tribute to the Adwa Victory Monument that symbolizes the sacrifices of the Ethiopian people.

Prime Minister conveyed India’s commitment to enhance and build stronger India-Ethiopia partnership. In this regard, he recalled the contribution of Indian teachers and Indian businesses to the growth and prosperity of Ethiopia. He shared India’s development experiences, including in the fields of digital public infrastructure, food processing and innovation and conveyed India’s readiness to continue its development support to Ethiopia in keeping with the latter’s priorities. Conveying India’s commitment to serve humanity as embodied in its principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” [the world is one family], he outlined that it was a privilege for India to supply Ethiopia with vaccines during the Covid pandemic.

​Prime Minister emphasized that India and Ethiopia, as nations of the Global South, must stand together to give greater voice to developing countries. He thanked Ethiopia for their solidarity in strengthening the global fight against terrorism.

Highlighting the pivotal role of Addis Ababa, headquarters to the African Union, in realizing the dreams of African unity, Prime Minister stated that India was honored to welcome the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 during its presidency. He added that under 11 years of his government, India-Africa connections have grown manifold, and the two sides have exchanged over 100 visits at the level of Heads of State and Government. He reflected upon India’s deep commitment to Africa’s development and underscored his proposal made at the Johannesburg G-20 Summit to launch “Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative” to train one million trainers in the continent.

Prime Minister thanked the Hon’ble Speaker for the opportunity to share India’s journey with a fellow democracy, noting that the Global South was writing its own destiny.
