Poverty is a Greenfield for missionaries who enter remote tribal regions and carry out large scale conversion in the pretext of providing services like healthcare and education. Areas ranging from Umargam of Gujarat to Jhabua of Madhya Pradesh and Jhalor of Rajasthan, where more than 80% of the population is tribal, have always been vulnerable to missionary activities from Europe and America. Poverty is a catalyst for religious conversions and has become equivalent to a lucrative business in the contemporary scenario. Hundreds of churches mushroomed in each tribal district. VHP national general secretary, Y Raghavulu, claimed that 8 lakh Hindus are converted into other religions each year. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar once wrote to a Bangalore based tabloid saying that, "Converting myself into Islam or Christianity will shift my loyalty towards Mecca or the Vatican, so I would much rather convert into Buddhism." As he foresaw the result of converting into Semitic religions.

According to a report, “Religion-based reservation was first introduced in Kerala, which was then Travancore-Cochin state, in 1936. In 1952, this was replaced with communal reservation, with 45% reservation. Of this, 35% were allotted to OBCs, which included Muslims. After Kerala was reorganized in 1956, the percentage of reservation was increased to 50, including 40% for OBCs. The government introduced a sub-quota within the OBCs wherein the Muslim share was 10%.” Currently, the reservation for the Muslim community has increased to 12% in Kerala government jobs and 8% in professional educational institutions. Unlike most of the other states, all Muslims, irrespective of their social and economic status, are categorised as OBC in Kerala.

We are all proud of a stronger, better India that does not even remember the dark ages. Bihar is voting again today. Much of the electorate, mostly young people, have only seen free and fair elections as far as they can remember. It is a wonderful thing. And so the election raths are rolling across Bihar again. Some have promised to give 10 lakh jobs and others have promised to create 19 lakh jobs. Let’s see who the electorate chooses to believe. But I’m sure nobody wants to return to the era when kidnapping and ransom was the biggest industry that Bihar’s rulers had to offer to their people.
